Demo Day Winter 2024: Highlights and Takeaways
Recap of our latest Demo Day featuring 12 incredible startups.
A Day to Remember
Launch Ground's Winter 2024 Demo Day brought together twelve exceptional startups, over 150 investors, and hundreds of ecosystem supporters for what many attendees described as our strongest showcase yet. Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the event was both a celebration of entrepreneurial achievement and a glimpse into the future of African innovation.
Each startup had seven minutes to pitch their vision, demonstrate traction, and make their case for investment. The energy in the room was electric, and the quality of the presentations left the audience buzzing long after the final pitch.
Standout Presentations
While every startup brought something unique to the stage, several presentations stood out for their ambition and execution. MediTrack, a healthtech platform that digitises patient records for rural clinics, captivated the audience with a live demonstration showing how their system cut patient wait times by 60% in pilot clinics across the Eastern Cape.
AgriConnect, a marketplace connecting smallholder farmers directly with buyers, demonstrated impressive traction: over 3,000 farmers onboarded and R8 million in transactions processed in their first six months. Their approach to solving the agricultural supply chain problem attracted significant investor interest.
PayBridge, a cross-border payment solution for SMEs trading between South Africa and its neighbouring countries, showcased a product that addresses a genuine pain point — the high cost and complexity of moving money across borders in Southern Africa. Their partnership with a major South African bank was announced on stage, generating audible excitement in the audience.
Investor Perspectives
We spoke with several investors after the event to gather their impressions. The consensus was overwhelmingly positive. 'The quality of startups coming out of Launch Ground has improved dramatically,' said one prominent VC. 'Two or three of these companies could be genuine category leaders in the next five years.'
Several investors noted the increasing maturity of the founders. 'These aren't naive first-time entrepreneurs with a PowerPoint and a dream,' observed another investor. 'These are founders who have done their homework, understand their unit economics, and can articulate a clear path to profitability.'
Key Themes and Trends
Three themes dominated this cohort's presentations. First, AI integration was everywhere — not as a buzzword, but as a practical tool for solving specific problems. From AI-powered crop disease detection to intelligent customer service automation, founders demonstrated genuine, defensible applications of machine learning.
Second, the focus on sustainability was more pronounced than in previous cohorts. Several startups were explicitly designed to address environmental challenges, from waste management platforms to carbon credit marketplaces.
Third, there was a notable shift towards B2B models. While consumer-facing startups dominated earlier cohorts, this batch leaned heavily towards enterprise solutions — reflecting the growing realisation that B2B models often offer more predictable revenue and clearer paths to profitability in African markets.
What's Next
Following Demo Day, the twelve startups enter a phase of active fundraising, supported by Launch Ground's investor network and mentorship programme. Based on early indications, we expect several of these companies to close their rounds within the next three months.
Applications for Launch Ground's Summer 2025 cohort open on January 15th. If you're building a technology startup in South Africa and looking for capital, mentorship, and a community of exceptional founders, we encourage you to apply. The next Demo Day could be your stage.
